Benedict Cumberbatch IN NEGOTIATIONS to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange
A few weeks ago, a few names were being thrown around as part of a short-list for Marvel Studios’ upcoming ‘Doctor Strange‘ movie. Shortly after Joaquin Phoenix left negotiations with the studio, the frontrunners were considered to be Colin Farrell, Ethan Hawke, Ewan McGregor and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Now, it seems like the search for the sorcerer supreme could be coming to a close as it’s being reported that Cumberbatch is in “final negotiations” with the studio to take the role.
Now, to be clear, THIS IS NOT FINAL NOR HAS IT BEEN CONFIRMED. Joaquin Phoenix was in negotiations for months to play the role and that didn’t pan out, so do not believe any websites that are saying it’s a done-deal. That is simply not correct and any “journalist” reporting that is being pitiful and irresponsible. Shame on ANYONE doing that. Not cool. You’re deliberately misleading your readers and viewers who should trust you. Don’t betray that trust just for a few “clicks”.
But IF this deal goes through, I may have to eat my Trilby, as I’ve been saying for a while that Cumberbatch would probably be unable to take the role. Production on Series 4 of ‘Sherlock‘ had to be delayed thanks to his commitment working on ‘The Imitation Game‘, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘ and the upcoming ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies‘ so the BBC wouldn’t dream of letting him out of their sights for too long working on other franchises. Also, thanks to Cumberbatch’s reputation, he’s not going to become any less busy over the next few years so I thought that he wouldn’t be able to commit to the multi-film deals that Marvel enforces on their central cast members (Sebastian Stan who played the Winter Soldier in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ has signed a NINE-PICTURE deal with Marvel Studios), but the fact that negotiations have gone as far as they have, indicates that maybe Cumberbatch might be able to find the time.
While it’s going to take a lot to replace the Phoenix-shaped hole in my heart as I have no doubt that Joaquin would have been sublime as the magic-wielding hero, Cumberbatch is one of the most talented and dramatically capable actors working in the industry today and I certainly wouldn’t say no to the idea of him leading a Marvel property. My only concern is that when he’s wearing the cape and sporting the prominent facial hair that we’ll be seeing Doctor Strange and not just Sherlock in cosplay.
‘Doctor Strange‘ will be directed by Scott Derrickson (‘Sinister‘ & ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘) with a screenplay penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (‘Sahara‘ & 2011’s ‘Conan The Barbarian‘) with re-writes by Joe Spaihts ( ‘The Darkest Hour‘ & ‘Prometheus‘). The movie will begin shooting in London’s Pinewood Studios in May 2015 for a July 8th 2016 release date.
