Doctor Who: Generations – Portal to the Past (SCRIPT)

generations 1In May 2014, Matthew Chadbourne contacted me from out of the blue and said he was doing a ‘Doctor Who‘ fan-series and had acquired a few actors as well as VFX experts to work on it. However, despite having a plot idea, he needed a writer and came to me. We chatted on Skype about what Matthew wanted to happen with the series and I agreed to write a two-part introductory story for what would become known as ‘Doctor Who: Generations‘.

Matthew told me what he wanted; a multi-Doctor story with the main Doctor being a weary traveller, a budget-conscious location, an “entity” villain who was defeated but with the possibility of return, the companion to be introduced and a planet called “Xanderland”. With this specific criteria, I was left to my own devices to write two 25-minute episodes. Less than two months later, the two scripts were sent and filming began in the Summer of 2014.

However, as these things happen with fan-projects, after the filming of Part 1, there were production snags and the female actor playing the Companion dropped-out meaning that Part 2 was never finished. Many people were curious as to how the story ended and how the original script for Part 1 turned out (as the final cut left many omission that, I myself personally, felt were very important and should not have been cut). So here are the scripts for ‘Doctor Who: Generations – Portal to the Past‘ Part 1 & Part 2, un-edited and in their entirety.

Happy reading!generations 2

DOCTOR WHO: GENERATIONS
PORTAL TO THE PAST – PART 1

INT. TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – DAY

The camera pans across the TARDIS console; a beautiful cylindrical creation full of cogs and gears with numerous buttons laid out strategically across its panels. Levers and switches are still active but feel neglected with rust and cracks.

The console room itself is darker than previously seen. The ship is still actively used but is in the need of refurbishment and change.

Slowly, a figure walks into the room. Defiantly, he strides towards the console and starts up the engine, but his upper body hidden in the shadow as he works.

THE DOCTOR (V/O)
I’ve been wandering around this Universe for close to a millennia. Fighting evil, witnessing history unfold before these eyes and experiencing its marvels.

THE DOCTOR flicks a switch and the column at the centre of the room kicks into action as the familiar TARDIS sound starts to echo throughout the room.

THE DOCTOR (V/O)
But as the years go on, as evil grows stronger, as these worlds decay through the passage of time, it makes me so very…very tired. After all...

THE DOCTOR turns a few knobs on the console, presses some buttons and moves a lever. Nothing. After a pause, he gives the console a firm thump with his fist and the TARDIS starts to shake and travel. The TARDIS interior lights up revealing the face of a significantly younger DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR (V/O)
I’m not as young as I used to be.

INT. TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – DAY

THE DOCTOR is sat on a chair next to the console with a magnifying glass examining a shiny piece of metal. He then takes out his sonic screwdriver from his blazer pocket and flashes its light across the surface. As he puts the screwdriver back in his pocket he holds the metal above him as it starts to develop a beautiful green hew.

A big smile grows on his face as the metal lights up the TARDIS.

The cloister bell then echoes throughout the room and the surprise of it causes THE DOCTOR to drop the metal which then shatters on the floor, like fragile glass.

THE DOCTOR
Oh, for crying out loud…

As the bell rings, THE DOCTOR leaps to the other side of the console and turns on the monitor which has many graphs and readings displayed on it.

THE DOCTOR
What’s the matter, old girl? Why you ringing the cloister bell? That thing seems to ring for anything nowadays.

The screen starts to flicker which prompts THE DOCTOR to give it a thwack to make it work again. Once he does this, the TARDIS lights start to turn red and the bell stops ringing.

THE DOCTOR
What’s all this then?

A moment of silence. THE DOCTOR uses his screwdriver on the screen. An image on the screen slowly starts to fade into view. THE DOCTOR squints in order to read the words slowly appearing, until eventually they come in clearly:

“WARNING – INTRUDER ALERT!”

THE DOCTOR’S eyes widen in horror, then the entire room starts shaking and the Doctor is thrown across the console. He hits his head on the floor and falls unconscious.

CUT TO BLACK.

EXT. POCKET DIMENSION – N/A FADE IN.

THE DOCTOR lays unconscious on the floor of a barren void. The area is completely white and devoid of any signs of life or activty. After a few moments, THE DOCTOR wakes up and lets out a groan. He struggles to his feet. He rubs his head and looks around.

He sees nothing. He hears nothing.

THE DOCTOR
Brilliant. Just brilliant!

His words echo throughout the space. After a few moments, a sharp piercing screech is heard. THE DOCTOR covers his ears in pain, until eventually he’s brought to his knees by the sound. He closes his eyes then…the sound stops.

He un-covers his ears and opens his eyes.

EXT. WOODLAND – MORNING

THE DOCTOR looks up to discover he’s now in a woodland area. A tranquil, lush environment. He gets back to his feet and surveys the landscape.

THE DOCTOR
Hello!?

No response.

THE DOCTOR
If this is some kind of practical joke, it’s gone on for long enough! Though, I will admit that it was very impressive.

THE DOCTOR takes out his screwdriver, adjusts some settings and holds it up to the sky and presses the button.

THE DOCTOR
Now, I’m just going to bring my TARDIS back and we can forget this misunderstanding ever happened!

His screwdriver whirs and beeps until eventually a police public call box starts to fade into view beside him.

THE DOCTOR
There we go! Problem solved!

The box fully materialises into view. THE DOCTOR puts his screwdriver away and approaches the door. He reaches out for the handle, but before he reaches it the doors open revealing a person inside.

He strides out and closes the TARDIS door behind him. This man is also THE DOCTOR (THE DOCTOR 2).

THE DOCTOR 2
Hello, there! I was wondering if you could help me!

THE DOCTOR is stunned. THE DOCTOR 2 appears confused at this reaction, but then he looks behind him at the TARDIS and realises the problem.

THE DOCTOR 2
Oh, I think I know what you’re confused about.

THE DOCTOR
Yeah, I think you do.

THE DOCTOR 2
You’re wondering how this blue box just appeared in front of you.

THE DOCTOR
Kind of, yes.

THE DOCTOR 2
Well…don’t drink the local water. You just hallucinated the entire thing.

THE DOCTOR 2 starts to walk off.

THE DOCTOR 2
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to track down a sonic signal.

THE DOCTOR
Wait, hold on a moment!

THE DOCTOR 2
I’m sorry, I can’t stop now. It’s very important I figure out the source of that signal!

THE DOCTOR 2 continues to leave. THE DOCTOR then takes out his screwdriver and presses the button. THE DOCTOR 2 stops in his tracks as his watch starts to beep.

THE DOCTOR 2
What the…?

He stares intensely at his watch.

THE DOCTOR 2
The source of that signal is VERY close by!

THE DOCTOR hides his screwdriver behind his back while still holding the button down. THE DOCTOR 2 approaches him looking at his watch the whole time.

THE DOCTOR 2
It’s 10 feet in…THIS direction! 8 feet…5 feet…2 feet!

THE DOCTOR 2 is now directly in front of THE DOCTOR, but not making contact. He looks up from his watch.

THE DOCTOR 2
I think I’ve found the source.

THE DOCTOR
I think you have.

Pause. THE DOCTOR 2 runs over to his TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR 2
Stand aside! I’m going to fetch a spade because the source is coming from right where you’re standing!

THE DOCTOR uses his screwdriver to lock the doors as the DOCTOR 2 runs towards the blue box. THE DOCTOR 2 attempts to open them, but to no avail. He then turns around and notices THE DOCTOR is the cause. He then stops and returns to him.

THE DOCTOR 2
How did you do that?

THE DOCTOR
Because that’s my TARDIS. Or, at least, it WAS my TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR 2
Does that mean…?

THE DOCTOR
Unfortunetly, it does.

Pause. THE DOCTOR 2 suddenly realises, then leaps backwards away from THE DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR
What?

THE DOCTOR 2
I think it’s best we keep our distance. If we make physical contact with each other, there could be a paradox.

THE DOCTOR
I’m not supposed to be here. Some force kicked me out of my own TARDIS. I was hoping to bring it back to me.

THE DOCTOR 2
So that was the signal I was following! You did bring your TARDIS to you…just a couple of hundred years too early.

THE DOCTOR
I’ll get over it. I need to figure out what took my TARDIS. And, more importantly, why?

CUT TO.

INT. TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – DAY

Inside the console room of the TARDIS, the red light is still glowing through the space. Then, slowly, a purple mist starts to envelop the console and switches and levers start turning and operating on their own.

CUT TO.

EXT. WOODLAND – MORNING

THE DOCTOR, on his own, is using his screwdriver to examine the local area. THE DOCTOR 2 steps out of his TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR 2
It’s no use. She’s not going anywhere right now.

THE DOCTOR
According to my readings, some force is keeping us trapped inside a bubble of my own past.

THE DOCTOR 2
Getting into the bubble is easy, but getting out…that’s the difficult part.

THE DOCTOR
For you, perhaps. But for me, I’ll be out in no time.

THE DOCTOR 2
Is that the years of experience talking?

THE DOCTOR
Centuries! You’ve got a lot to look forward to, DOCTOR! The oncoming storm, the Universe’s greatest defender, there will barely be a single person in the Universe that doesn’t know you!

THE DOCTOR 2 looks very concerned.

THE DOCTOR 2
The oncoming what?

THE DOCTOR realises how that sounds when said out loud.

THE DOCTOR
The oncoming…storm…

THE DOCTOR 2
That makes us sound like a force of destruction. Is that what my future is? Titles, confrontation and a celebrity status?

THE DOCTOR
It’s not how it sounds.

THE DOCTOR 2
I’m sure it’s not but…I don’t know.

THE DOCTOR continues to analyse the barrier as THE DOCTOR 2 takes a seat on a nearby log.

THE DOCTOR 2
Do you even remember why we began travelling in the fist place?

THE DOCTOR
Because I….we, wanted to break away from the mundane. From the Time Lords.

THE DOCTOR 2
It wasn’t just that though, was it?

THE DOCTOR stops working. He stands up and approaches THE DOCTOR 2. THE DOCTOR 2 stands up to confront him, while still making sure not to make contact.

THE DOCTOR
Listen, you’re a couple of centuries younger than me. You have no idea what the future holds.

THE DOCTOR 2
It’s not all about the future, you know.

Pause. THE DOCTOR has nothing to say. He takes out his screwdriver and shoves it to THE DOCTOR 2’s chest for him to take it.

THE DOCTOR
Here. YOU try!

As soon as he makes contact, a purple portal appears beside them for a brief moment.

The two leap back as the portal disappears.

THE DOCTOR 2
By Rassilon’s beard!

THE DOCTOR 2 has taken THE DOCTOR’S screwdriver and starts scanning where the portal used to be. THE DOCTOR childishly snatches it back but once he does, the portal opens again. THE DOCTOR figures it out.

THE DOCTOR
It’s the force of the paradox! Us two making contact creates…a rift, a sort of worm-hole!

THE DOCTOR 2
But it didn’t look very stable. Is that our way out?

THE DOCTOR
I don’t know. Frankly, worm holes as a result of paradoxes are never good news.

THE DOCTOR 2 looks at the wormhole and takes a step towards it.

THE DOCTOR
Careful. We don’t know where it leads or what will happen when we pass through it. And if something happens to you…

THE DOCTOR 2
Will the oncoming storm blow over?

THE DOCTOR 2 takes another step towards it. On the other side is a forest very similar to the one they’re in right now, except it’s darker. Through the wormhole, THE DOCTOR 2 sees a figure shuffle around in the dark. It’s a human.

THE DOCTOR 2
Hello? Who goes there?!

After a pause, the figure slowly turns around but before it can be revealed, the wormhole closes.

THE DOCTOR 2
Oh, come on! Quick, let’s make contact again!

THE DOCTOR
We can’t keep tearing up space for a better view! That’d me like tearing a hole in an airplane because you didn’t get the window seat! Who knows what kind of damage we could be causing! Let’s see if the TARDIS can give us a better look.

CUT TO.

INT. THE DOCTOR 2’S TARDIS – DAY

The TARDIS of THE DOCTOR 2 has a more “retro” feeling then the TARDIS of THE DOCTOR. It feels more alive, fresh and pristine.

THE DOCTOR and THE DOCTOR 2 enter. THE DOCTOR 2 approaches the monitor and hits a switch. The monitor turns on immediately. THE DOCTOR admires the room.

THE DOCTOR
Blimey, I let this place go.

THE DOCTOR 2
It’s not THAT bad!

THE DOCTOR
No, sorry. I was referring to MY TARDIS. I’ve kind of neglected her recently.

Beeping noises start to come from the TARDIS console.

THE DOCTOR 2
’Course not, old girl! I would never neglect you!

On the TARDIS monitor is the forest outside.

THE DOCTOR 2
Now, if we use the frequency from your screwdriver…

He places the screwdriver in a slot in the TARDIS console. Readings appear on the monitor.

THE DOCTOR
Then it can use those readings to look through the wormhole.

The monitor transitions to a view of the darker forest where there are more humans shuffling around in a trance-life state?

THE DOCTOR
What are they doing?

After a moment of silence, one of the figures stops shuffling and just starts screaming. Then another figure follows suit. The second one then starts flailing its arms and attacks one of the shuffling figures.

Static starts to engulf the image. THE DOCTOR 2 hits the screen in frustration.

THE DOCTOR 2
Whoever trapped us here doesn’t want us to know what’s going on outside the bubble.

No response.

THE DOCTOR 2
DOCTOR?

He turns around to find himself alone.

CUT TO.

EXT. WOODLAND – MORNING

THE DOCTOR is laying on the ground observing the grass and leaves. THE DOCTOR 2 steps out of the TARDIS and watches.

THE DOCTOR picks up a dead leaf, rips it apart and smells it. He then licks another leaf and almost immediately spits it back out.

THE DOCTOR
Yuk!

THE DOCTOR 2 admirably observes his older self in action.

THE DOCTOR
Those are humans out there. But this isn’t earth. This is Xanderland.

THE DOCTOR 2
Xanderland?

THE DOCTOR
Oh, there’s an echo in this bubble. Yes, Xanderland. The foliage all around us is secreting a toxin which drives living creatures mad.

THE DOCTOR 2
But we’re not being affected by it?

THE DOCTOR
Well, higher species have a natural resistance to it. But for species with lesser immune systems…it can be a living hell just being on the planet. It’s basically a defence mechanism so un-evolved life doesn’t populate and breed.

THE DOCTOR 2
The planet has its own defence mechanism?

THE DOCTOR
Basically, it’s like natural selection except it just skips to the final stages.

THE DOCTOR 2
Fascinating.

THE DOCTOR
It is, yeah. I’ve never been to Xanderland but I’ve read about it and it has a fascinating history.

THE DOCTOR 2
No, I meant you.

THE DOCTOR
Me?

THE DOCTOR 2
You, just sauntering around knowing everything. Able to identity a planet by taste of all things. I guess, my future’s not all doom and gloom.

THE DOCTOR
What did you mean earlier? About leaving the Time Lords?

THE DOCTOR 2
Yes, we wanted to escape the time lords. But not because they were boring and restrictive…but because there was a massive universe out there. Planets to see, people to meet, history to watch! Right now, we’re standing on a planet that personifies natural selection! How amazing is that!?

THE DOCTOR has a true smile on his face.

THE DOCTOR
It is pretty brilliant.

THE DOCTOR 2
I don’t doubt that there’s evil to fight. We’ve both been fighting for a long time. But don’t forget just WHAT we’re fighting for. And don’t forget WHY we travel.

THE DOCTOR
And why’s that?

THE DOCTOR 2
Because it’s so much fun!

They both smile, before realising there’s a task that needs to be done.

THE DOCTOR 2
Right, we need to find a way out of this bubble and help those people out there.

THE DOCTOR
The way they reacted to the atmosphere confirms that they’re human, but how did they even get here?

THE DOCTOR 2
Your guess is as a good as mine.

THE DOCTOR
My guess is LITERALLY your guess.

THE DOCTOR 2
You may be older, but that doesn’t mean you can be cocky.

THE DOCTOR
But we need to find out what’s going on outside and, more importantly, how those humans got there?

THE DOCTOR 2
And why they’re there.

The camera pans across the forest and passes through the forcefield to reveal…

EXT. WOODLAND – NIGHT

…outside the barrier, there are human figures scattered around. As the camera pans across the environment, a groaning sound can be heard. Wind starts to pick up blowing leafs around.

The sound is revealed to be coming from a TARDIS. The familiar blue box of the older Doctor comes fading into view. It fully materialises. Its doors open and a couple of humans stumble out of it. One of them quickly stands back up and starts pounding on the door, but the TARDIS disappears again.

Moments later, the same scenario plays out again but in a nearby location. The TARDIS appears, drops many humans off and leaves. This continues on and on until the forest is full of people who start inhaling the atmosphere on the planet.

CUT TO.

INT. TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM – DAY

Inside the TARDIS, the purple mist has duplicated and is operating the TARDIS at a rapid rate.

CUT TO.

EXT. WOODLAND – MORNING

THE DOCTOR and THE DOCTOR 2 are still inside where none of the chaos from outside can be found. THE DOCTOR is pacing around.

THE DOCTOR
But we can’t find anything out from inside this stupid bubble!

THE DOCTOR kicks the bubble, causing a purple ripple where he left the impact.

THE DOCTOR
Ow!

THE DOCTOR 2
I hope you don’t solve all your problems by kicking them.

THE DOCTOR
You’ll be surprised how many problems can be solved by giving things a good hard thwack!

THE DOCTOR 2
Well, that’s not going to work here. I think the only way out of here is through the wormhole generated when we make contact.

THE DOCTOR
But we don’t know the effects it could cause! We might not even survive the trip.

THE DOCTOR 2
No. YOU might not even survive the trip.

Pause.

THE DOCTOR
I’m sorry, what?

THE DOCTOR 2
Well, I can’t go back and risk dying. If you’re the older version of me, then I can’t risk death. Think of the paradox.

Pause as THE DOCTOR thinks.

THE DOCTOR
That’s a legitimately good excuse.

THE DOCTOR 2
Well then, let’s send you through.

THE DOCTOR looks nervous. Unsure of what will happen outside. He takes a deep breath. With a reassuring smile, THE DOCTOR 2 extends his hand to THE DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR
But what about you and your TARDIS? You’d be stuck here.

THE DOCTOR 2
I have faith that…THE DOCTOR, will be able to fix the problem at hand.

THE DOCTOR
Remember, you’re THE DOCTOR too.

THE DOCTOR 2
No, not yet. Everything you’ve told me, everything you’ve suggested about the future, those sound like the acts of an extraordinary man.

THE DOCTOR 2 puts his hand down and turns away.

THE DOCTOR 2
That’s not me, yet.

THE DOCTOR
Do you travel around for fun? And because you want to explore the universe?

THE DOCTOR 2
Of course I do.

THE DOCTOR
Then you’re THE DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR 2 turns around to face him.

THE DOCTOR
You’re THE DOCTOR. With the vibrant TARDIS and a spring in his step. You’re THE DOCTOR I’d almost forgotten how to be.

THE DOCTOR extends his hand out. THE DOCTOR 2 smiles and the two shake hands.

With a burst of light, a purple portal appears next to them.

THE DOCTOR 2
’Til we meet again, DOCTOR.

THE DOCTOR
Hopefully.

THE DOCTOR 2
Hopefully!? I’m counting on you getting me and my TARDIS out of here! So we’d better meet again!

THE DOCTOR
Well then, DOCTOR…

THE DOCTOR appears like he’s going to give a massive, heartfelt speech but THE DOCTOR 2 quickly interrupts.

THE DOCTOR 2
Get going! You’ve got a job to do!

THE DOCTOR 2, still holding onto THE DOCTOR’S hand throws him through the portal. As the portal starts closing, the two can still see each other through the gap.

THE DOCTOR 2
DOCTOR!

THE DOCTOR
Yes?!

THE DOCTOR 2
Good luck! And remember what I told you!

The portal closes. After a brief moment, THE DOCTOR turns around to survey the scene. He sees all the humans abandoned on the planet, undergoing different responses to the atmosphere.

THE DOCTOR turns around at where the portal used to be.

THE DOCTOR
“Don’t forget what we’re fighting for.”

Remembering the other Doctor’s words, he takes a deep breath and marches forward towards the chaos taking place on the planet. As he does so, the purple gaseous entity comes down from the sky and starts to pursue him.

OPENING TITLES

EXT. – FOREST – EVENING

Continuing on from Part 1, THE DOCTOR has left the portal and is marching forward into the forest. He advances forward towards a group of humans reacting to the atmosphere of the planet in different ways.

He cautiously moves forward, slightly crouched down. As he steps forward, he steps on a stick and breaks it making a snapping sound. He quickly side-steps behind a tree before one of the humans turns to see where the noise came from.

While behind the tree, he surveys the immediate area. He notices a large rock next to him, he picks it up, thinks for a moment and then throws it far away from him. The resulting *THUD* attracts the attention of the humans who then move in that direction.

Once the coast is clear, the Doctor moves from the safety of the tree and makes his way through the forest. In the distance, the sound of the TARDIS can be heard, but it’s different somehow. The noise of the TARDIS sounds strained, almost as if it’s in pain.

The TARDIS then fades into view near the Doctor, who eagerly approaches it.

THE DOCTOR
There you are, girl! We can finally get things fixed!

The TARDIS fully lands and the doors burst open, flinging the Doctor off his feet. As he stands himself back up, a large group of humans step out. The Doctor, unsure of what to do, makes another attempt to step inside the TARDIS. But before he can reach the doors, a large purple gaseous form comes out from the doors and hits the Doctor in the chest, knocking him over again.

THE DOCTOR
Oh, come on! I’m getting too old to be flung around like this!

The TARDIS doors shut and the ship fades out of view. The Doctor stands up and confronts the entity.

THE DOCTOR
So, YOU’RE the one responsible for all of this, aye?

No response. The entity just circles the Doctor.

THE DOCTOR
The silent treatment won’t get you anywhere in life, Mr. Gas Man! Now, tell me, what’s the meaning of all of this?

Nothing.

THE DOCTOR
This is your last warning, tell me what you’re up to or…

The Entity launches itself at the Doctor’s head and…

TRANSITION TO.

INT. – THE DOCTOR’S MIND – N/A

THE DOCTOR finds himself in a large purple void alone. He looks around.

THE DOCTOR
…or I’ll have to stop you!

THE ENTITY (V/O)
You cannot stop me, Doctor.

THE DOCTOR
Oh, thank goodness. For a moment there I thought I’d have to end up talking to myself. And if I kept doing that, people would think I was crazy.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
It’s what I’ve come to expect from you, Doctor.

THE DOCTOR
Hmmm? No, sorry. I wasn’t talking to you. Anyway, so you know me?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the Universe who hasn’t be influenced in some way by…”The Doctor”.

THE DOCTOR
Well, I’m a centuries old time-traveller. I’ve been around.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
Making yourself known to the Universe, dictating who lives and who dies. You’re a fairy-tale in some cultures, and a deity in others.

THE DOCTOR
Your point being?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
Well, if I wanted my plan to work I knew that you’d be obtrusive. The Doctor is well known for his fondness of Earth.

THE DOCTOR
What do you want with these people?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
I don’t want them. That’s exactly the point.

PAUSE.

THE DOCTOR
Excuse me?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
We’ll meet again soon, DOCTOR. But for now, I have work to do. Thank you for letting me borrow your TARDIS. Without it, this plan would never have been made possible.

THE DOCTOR
Leave the TARDIS and human race out of this!

The Doctor clutches his head in pain for a moment and…

TRANSITION TO.

EXT – FOREST – EVENING

THE DOCTOR is back where he was.

CUT TO.

EXT. EARTH STREET – EVENING

An ordinary street, HANNAH (early 20s) is walking home from work, satchel over her shoulder. As she walks, she notices a group of school-kids on their bikes nearby. She thinks for a moment, then goes over to them.

HANNAH
JASON!

One of the boys stops their bike.

JASON
Urm, yes Miss?

HANNAH
JASON, we’re not at school right now. You can call me HANNAH outside the classroom.

JASON
Urm, okay, HANNAH?

HANNAH
I was wondering, have you or any of your friends seen MATTHEW? He wasn’t in school today.

JASON
Actually, we went to his house earlier and his mum said she’s not seen him all day.

HANNAH
Okay. Well, if you see him, tell him homework’s due.

HANNAH leaves the group to their fun. She walks across the road towards her house.

INT. HANNAH’S HOUSE – EVENING

HANNAH walks through the front-door, closes it and drops her keys in dish on a nearby table. She takes the newspaper on the doormat and walks into the kitchen.

In the kitchen, she places the newspaper on the side. The headline reads “No pattern in local disappearances”. She pours herself a glass of water from a nearby tap and takes sip. She then notices something strange on the counter.

Nearby, there’s a note and a small white paper bag. She puts the glass down and heads over to the note. She reads it to herself.

HANNAH (reading)
Dear Hannah, this will probably make zero sense to you right now. But you need to trust me.

HANNAH looks around the room for a moment before continuing.

HANNAH (reading)
It is of paramount importance that you eat what’s in the bag before you’re…taken.

As soon as she reads “taken”, a look of fear develops on her face. She takes a frightened deep breath and carries on.

HANNAH (reading)
Now…stop reading. You only have around 15 seconds before you’re taken. Your life depends on it.

HANNAH puts the note down and opens the white bag. She takes something out of it, unseen by the viewer. She looks perplexed. The sound of the TARDIS can be heard nearby, she takes a closer look at what she’s holding.

A red jelly-baby.

As wind starts to pick up in the kitchen, she thinks hard for a moment and then eat’s the Jelly baby. Despite being a delicacy, she reacts horribly to it as if it tastes bad, but she swallows it anyway before the TARDIS appears in her garden. She looks out the window holding the note. The TARDIS doors open, the purple entity bursts out and charges towards her.

CUT TO.

INT. TARDIS – N/A

HANNAH wakes up, inside the TARDIS surrounded by other humans also waking up. The TARDIS is dark with a purple hue in the air. As HANNAH stays down, she turns to the person next to her.

HANNAH
What’s going on?

MAN #1
I don’t know. I…I was just outside and then I woke up here!

As he talks, the purple entity slowly rises up behind him.

HANNAH
Behind you!

Before the man can turn around, the entity lunges at him and goes into his head as Hannah watches on helplessly. After a few moments, the Man stands up with a vacant expression and starts walking towards the TARDIS doors along with other, similarly possessed humans.

The entity then rises up behind Hannah and possesses her. She slowly stands up and walks towards the door with the other humans. The TARDIS landing sound can be heard, then the doors burst open revealing the forest outside. The Entity then pushes all of the humans out of the door.

EXT. FOREST – EVENING

The humans are pushed out of the TARDIS door and they slowly rise to their feet as the TARDIS behind them fades away. Once the TARDIS has left, the entity leaves the minds of the humans.

The humans lurch forward as the entity leaves them and they look around confused and scared at their surroundings.

MAN #2
Where are we?

MAN #3
No idea!

WOMAN 1#
What was that thing? And what was that box?!

HANNAH
I saw that box before it took me away.

MAN #3
Do you have any idea what’s going on here?

HANNAH
I don’t, but if we keep calm…

MAN #2 starts gasping for air.

HANNAH
What’s wrong?

HANNAH rushes to attend to him, but by the time she reaches him the other humans are experiencing the same effects, but HANNAH is unaffected.

HANNAH
No, please! What can I do to help!? Don’t leave me on my own!

THE DOCTOR (O/S)
You’re not on your own.

HANNAH looks into the distance and sees THE DOCTOR emerge from the shadow of the trees.

HANNAH
Who are you?

THE DOCTOR
I’m the Doctor.

HANNAH
You’re a Doctor? Can you help these people?

THE DOCTOR
I can’t. They’re reacting to the atmosphere. And you really need to step away from them.

HANNAH quickly takes his advice and stands at THE DOCTOR’S side.

THE DOCTOR
So, what I need to do is get my TARDIS back, stop the entity and find out why…you’re not turning insane.

HANNAH
Excuse me?

THE DOCTOR
You are human, right?

HANNAH
Why? Is that a minimum requirement?

THE DOCTOR
The humans brought here react violently to the atmosphere but it’s had no effect on you. How come?

HANNAH
I…

THE DOCTOR
Actually, let’s get away from those nice folks over there first.

THE DOCTOR points at the humans in front of the TARDIS who are slowly rising to their feet.

THE DOCTOR grabs HANNAH’S hand and the two make their ways through the forest.

INT. TARDIS – N/A

Inside the TARDIS console room, there’s the familiar dark hue around it as it’s corrupted by the entity.

There is silence for a few moments.

The lights in the TARDIS flicker which removes the dark hue from the room and the TARDIS “in-flight” noise begins as levers and switches start to move on their own.

But after a few seconds, the entity regains control. The darkness descends upon the TARDIS again and the levers stop moving.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
Heh heh, nice try.

The gaseous form appears in the TARDIS again and the TARDIS begins to strain and groan.

EXT. FOREST – EVENING

THE DOCTOR and HANNAH are walking through the forest together, deep in conversation.

THE DOCTOR
…so when the humans breath in the air, it attacks them. It’s a defence mechanism for the planet that only affects lower life forms like humans.

HANNAH
You seem to hold such a high opinion for yourself. What’s wrong with humans?

THE DOCTOR
But why didn’t it affect you?

THE DOCTOR stops and takes out his sonic screwdriver and starts scanning HANNAH.

THE DOCTOR
If you are, indeed, human then there must be something different about you. Do you have any awkward family members who might not quite be human?

HANNAH
Well, I always thought my older brother was adopted.

THE DOCTOR
And why is that?

HANNAH
Because he’s my brother.

THE DOCTOR
Open wide.

THE DOCTOR opens HANNAH’s mouth and starts scanning her.

THE DOCTOR
You’ve not ingested anything strange have you?

HANNAH
Hey, stop that!

HANNAH pushes him away.

HANNAH
Have you never heard of…boundaries?

THE DOCTOR
Well, have you ingested anything?

HANNAH takes the bag of jelly babies out of her pocket and throws them at him.

HANNAH
These were in my kitchen with a note saying to eat them before that blue box took me.

THE DOCTOR
Don’t take it personally, the TARDIS isn’t quite feeling herself today.

THE DOCTOR takes out a jelly baby and eats it. After a few chews he spits it out.

THE DOCTOR
Ewww, yuck! Wait…wait wait wait wait.

HANNAH
Yeah, they were quite foul.

THE DOCTOR
That’s because there are added ingredients here. Whoever left these for you knew you were going to need protection from the atmosphere and gave you the antidote.

HANNAH
Who?

THE DOCTOR
Who? That’s certainly the question. But I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever did it hasn’t done it quite yet.

PAUSE.

HANNAH
I’m seeing your mouth move and I’m hearing words, but I have no idea what you’re actually saying!

THE DOCTOR
Time travel is wonderful, isn’t it?

HANNAH
But why me? Why did…whoever left me those things…choose me to be the one who can breath here?

THE DOCTOR has a smile on his face, knowing full well what’s happening.

THE DOCTOR
I guess we’ll find out.

HANNAH lightly smiles.

THE DOCTOR
First objective is to get my TARDIS back. Second is to get all the humans off this planet and third is to save my past self.

HANNAH
Wait, past self?

THE DOCTOR
Now, the entity has taken over my TARDIS and…

HANNAH
Doctor!

THE DOCTOR
Yes.

HANNAH
Please actually fill me in on what this is all about!?

THE DOCTOR
The TARDIS, that blue box, that’s my spaceship and this entity is using it to transport humans here. I would use my screwdriver to bring it to me remotely, but the entity is fighting the signal. I need to get my ship back if I’m going to fix this.

HANNAH
Okay, so how do we do that?

THE DOCTOR
Distraction.

HANNAH
And what can I do to help?

CUT TO.

INT – TARDIS – N/A

More humans are pushed out of the TARDIS by the entity and the doors slam shut.

Before the TARDIS starts up again, the sound of the sonic screwdriver can be heard and the voice of the Doctor starts echoing throughout the TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR (V/O)
Mr Gas-Man! If I could have your attention, please! I request your presence so we can talk this through!

EXT. FOREST – EVENING

THE DOCTOR is stood in the forest alone, with the sonic screwdriver in his hand like a microphone.

THE DOCTOR
If you want the TARDIS, you can have it. But only on my terms! If you show yourself then we can discuss them!

The TARDIS immediately shows up near him, the TARDIS still groaning as it lands. The doors burst open and the entity flies out and confronts the Doctor, head-on. The doors of the TARDIS stay open. The Doctor throws his screwdriver a few feet away.

THE DOCTOR
See. I’m un-armed. Let’s talk things through.

The entity engulfs the Doctor’s head.

INT. – THE DOCTOR’S MIND – N/A

THE DOCTOR is in the void of his mind.

THE DOCTOR
This is becoming a regular thing with you. I feel like I should install a revolving door in my own head.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
Enough. State your terms.

THE DOCTOR
I’m not able to fight you while you have my TARDIS. And I doubt you’re going to give it back. So you can have it and do whatever you want, under a few conditions.

PAUSE.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
Name them.

THE DOCTOR
Very co-operative. First of all tell me what’s going on. Why lock me in the barrier? If you wanted my ship, why not just kill me?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
You’re the Universe’s most renowned defender, Doctor. As proven many many times throughout time and space, you are very difficult to kill. And even then, you could just regenerate. I thought keeping you locked away would be the most secure method of dealing with you.

THE DOCTOR
What are you hoping to achieve? And why don’t you want the humans if you’re going through such great lengths to move them?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
I’m the only one of my kind in the Universe, Doctor. And for very good reason. I feast on planets to sustain myself and Earth is my next target.

THE DOCTOR
Okay, but why move the humans around? Can’t you consume the planet with them on it or do they give you indigestion?

PAUSE. The Doctor laughs to himself.

THE DOCTOR
Oh my goodness, they do! First try!

THE ENTITY (V/O)
I’ve spent centuries feasting on un-inhabited planets. But with the Universe growing in population they’re becoming increasingly harder to find. Even in the Solar System all the planets there are teaming with life.

THE DOCTOR
Even Pluto?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
The organisms on earth are able to put up the least resistance, so that was my choice of planet.

THE DOCTOR
The other planets are going to notice that one has gone missing. How do you think you’ll get away with this?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
I’m an immortal creature as long as I can continue to find planets to consume. I cannot be stopped. I even have the Doctor, the Universe’s most powerful and feared hero, grovelling at my feet for his precious TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR
Nonsense. You don’t even have feet. And I have my reasons.

CUT TO.

EXT – THE FOREST – EVENING

The Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver lays on the floor in the grass. HANNAH emerges from behind a tree and picks it up. She makes her way towards the TARDIS to find the doors closed. She attempts to open the door at the handle, but to no avail. She then looks at the screwdriver and notices a chain on the end of it.

A key is attached to the bottom of the screwdriver.

CUT TO.

INT. – TARDIS – N/A

HANNAH opens the door and enters the dark console room. She takes a few steps inside before realising something. She looks around at the scale of the room. She quickly rushes out.

EXT. – FOREST – EVENING

HANNAH runs out of the TARDIS, runs around the blue box and then runs back in.

INT. – TARDIS – N/A

She runs through the doors and looks around again.

HANNAH
Hannah, you’ve got a job to do. Focus.

She takes a deep breath and approaches the console.

INT. – THE DOCTOR’S MIND – N/A

THE DOCTOR
So you’re using my TARDIS to move the population of Earth to Xanderland? That’s not an efficient method for mass transportation.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
It’s not an ideal situation, but I’ve immensely enjoyed using the ship of the Time Lords! Not to mention the time travelling capabilities of your ship means I can take hundreds of humans every second. And I can watch them one by one get corrupted by the air of Xanderland.

THE DOCTOR
This is not a game!

THE ENTITY (V/O)
If it’s not a game, then why is it so much fun!?

THE DOCTOR won’t even dignify that with a response.

THE DOCTOR
How long until you’ve taken enough of the population?

THE ENTITY (V/O)
There’s no amount. I can destroy the Earth whenever I want to. The less people, the more ideal. But the more people I move, the more I can watch go mad on this planet.

INT. – TARDIS – N/A

HANNAH approaches the TARDIS console, screwdriver in hand. She surveys the console and searches around.

INT. – THE DOCTOR’S MIND – N/A

THE DOCTOR
I’ll give you one last chance to stop what you’re doing. If you want, you can just leave Earth alone, I’LL return the humans just to save you the trouble and you can just find some other way to exist.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
I’ll have to decline that offer, Doctor.

THE DOCTOR
In that case then, I’m going to get my TARDIS back.

THE ENTITY (V/O)
How? I’m in control of your ship, Doctor. I’ll never let you have control over it again!

THE DOCTOR
Oh, not THAT TARDIS. I meant my OTHER TARDIS.

PAUSE.

THE ENTITY
*OTHER* TARDIS?

INT. TARDIS – N/A

HANNAH finds what she is looking for in the TARDIS console and inserts the sonic screwdriver into a holder.

The sonic screwdriver emanates a loud buzzing sound.

INT. – THE DOCTOR’S MIND – N/A

THE DOCTOR
You see, you’re right. There’s no way I can overpower you or stop you. You’re an incredibly powerful being. You HAVE to be to take over the TARDIS. But with that leftover power inside the TARDIS, I might just be able to save someone that’s been trapped nearby. So thanks for the power-boost.

After a pause. THE ENTITY leaves the Doctor’s head.

EXT. FOREST – EVENING

HANNAH leaves the TARDIS just as the entity leaves THE DOCTOR’S head. The Doctor falls to his knees and Hannah helps him up. As she does this, a second Police Public Call Box fades into view.

After a few moments, THE DOCTOR 2 steps out of it.

THE DOCTOR 2
What took you so long?!

THE DOCTOR
Ungrateful…

HANNAH
Who is that?

THE DOCTOR
Too difficult to explain. Stand back!

THE DOCTOR stands beside THE DOCTOR 2 in front of his TARDIS with HANNAH.

THE ENTITY appears nearby. Its purple-colour tone slowly starts to turn red as a couple of nearby humans slowly get corrupted by the Entity and start talking in unison.

THE ENTITY (CROWD)
Doctor! You have meddled in my affairs for the last time!

HANNAH
I think you just made it angry.

THE DOCTOR 2
I hope you have a plan.

THE DOCTOR
Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll give me a hand.

THE ENTITY (CROWD)
I wanted to spare you, Doctor. But now I have no choice but to destroy you!

The gaseous entity charges forward towards the trio of heroes.

THE DOCTOR
Doctor, seriously, give me a hand.

THE DOCTOR 2
What?

THE DOCTOR quickly steps over to THE DOCTOR 2, takes his hand and they throw themselves on the floor, with the Doctor taking HANNAH down with them.

At the moment the two Doctors make contact, a purple portal opens up and THE ENTITY flies right into it.

THE DOCTOR stands up, takes his screwdriver from HANNAH and sonics the portal until it closes.

THE DOCTOR then collapses on the floor.

HANNAH
Doctor, are you okay? You! Help me get him on his feet!

THE DOCTOR 2
I can’t make contact with him again, otherwise we risk releasing that…thing.

HANNAH
Doctor!

THE DOCTOR
I’m fine, Hannah. Let’s just not cut it so close in future. I’m getting too old for all this excitement.

HANNAH
So, the plan worked then?

THE DOCTOR
It did, thanks to you. You did great, Hannah. Honestly, thank you.

THE DOCTOR 2
So, what now?

THE DOCTOR
Well, you and your TARDIS are free from that barrier which has now locked the entity inside.

THE DOCTOR 2
Do you think that’ll hold it?

THE DOCTOR
I honestly don’t know. But right now, we need to get all these humans back to Earth. Even this one.

HANNAH
Me?

THE DOCTOR
So, DOCTOR, with the help of your TARDIS and my TARDIS we can send all these humans back in no time at all.

THE DOCTOR 2
Okay, I’ll make a start. Young lady, could you please wait in his TARDIS while I talk to the DOCTOR in private for a moment?

HANNAH
Fine. Nice to meet you…DOCTOR?

THE DOCTOR 2
I’m sure you’ll get used to it. Nice to meet you too.

HANNAH goes inside THE DOCTOR’S TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR 2
You’re not taking her home, are you?

THE DOCTOR
Why shouldn’t I?

THE DOCTOR 2
By the sounds of it, she saved your skin out there.

THE DOCTOR
So everyone who helps me should travel with me? By that logic I should roll out the red carpet for you.

THE DOCTOR 2
Listen, she’s looking out for you. I won’t force you, but at least consider it. This Universe can become jaded, but through the eyes of another, it can be something completely new. Remember why we travel?

THE DOCTOR smiles.

THE DOCTOR
Because it’s fun.

THE DOCTOR 2
Exactly!

The two go to shake hands, but stop themselves before they make contact.

THE DOCTOR
Okay, I’ll think about it. But no promises!

THE DOCTOR makes his way to his TARDIS and THE DOCTOR 2 makes his way to his.

THE DOCTOR 2
Well, always a pleasure, Doctor.

THE DOCTOR
You too, Doctor.

Both go into their respective ships and close their doors at the same time. Both boxes fade away.

INT. HANNAH’S HOUSE – MORNING

THE DOCTOR and HANNAH enter the house after parking the TARDIS in the garden.

HANNAH
I never thought I’d be so glad to see home again!

THE DOCTOR just stands and watches her. HANNAH takes the newspaper from the front door and sees the headline.

HANNAH
Well, looks like you and the other guy have returned everyone.

She throws the newspaper on a table and the headline reads “Missing People Found Safe. Cause remains unknown”.

HANNAH
So…what now?

THE DOCTOR
I don’t know.

HANNAH
What do you mean?

THE DOCTOR
Well, I’m assuming that we go our separate ways now.

HANNAH
Can I come with you?

THE DOCTOR
Sorry?

HANNAH
You have a magic blue box that can travel through time…

THE DOCTOR
…and space…

HANNAH
…and space! Please can you take me somewhere?

THE DOCTOR
Firstly, it’s not magic. And secondly…no. I…I prefer to travel alone.

HANNAH is understanding.

HANNAH
Okay, I…I’m sorry.

THE DOCTOR
Thank you for helping me out today. But…maybe we’ll meet again?

HANNAH
Maybe.

Awkward Pause. HANNAH reaches into her pockets and takes out the note and the Jelly Babies.

HANNAH
You might need these. Y’know, if you want to cure the humans.

THE DOCTOR
Thanks. Well, I’ve got to help the other guy. He’ll get grumpy if I don’t get there soon.

HANNAH
Of course. I’ll…I’ll see you soon?

THE DOCTOR
…yeah. See you soon.

THE DOCTOR steps outside and makes his way to his TARDIS as HANNAH watches. Without looking back, he opens the door, closes it and the TARDIS fades away as HANNAH sighs.

INT. – TARDIS – N/A

THE DOCTOR steps inside. He leans against the TARDIS, deep in thought, debating with himself. He reaches into his pockets and takes out the Jelly-Baby and the note. He reads the note to himself and thinks.

FADE TO.

EXT – EARTH STREET – EVENING

A repeat of HANNAH’s introduction. She is walking down the street, satchel over the shoulder, but she seems sadder now. Thinking what could have been.

She passes the teenagers on bikes but doesn’t stop or look at them. One of them rides up to her.

MATTHEW
Miss?

HANNAH
Hmm? Oh, MATTHEW. You can call me HANNAH outside of Class.

MATTHEW
Miss HANNAH, sorry I wasn’t at school the other day. I can’t really remember where I was, but my friends said you were asking about my homework and…well…

HANNAH
Tell you what, hand it to me by the end of the week. I’ll give you an extension considering the circumstances.

MATTHEW
Thank you, Miss…HANNAH.

HANNAH
But that’s the only mulligan you’ll get, MATTHEW! See you in lessons tomorrow!

MATTHEW takes his bike over to his friends as HANNAH makes her way back home.

INT. HANNAH’S HOME – EVENING

HANNAH walks through the front door, closes it, leaves her keys in a dish on the side and makes her way to the kitchen. She pours out a glass of water, takes a sip, turns around and notices the DOCTOR is stood there.

In shock, she jumps and drops her water on the floor and breaks the glass.

HANNAH
DOCTOR! Don’t sneak up on me like that!

THE DOCTOR
Oh, sorry I thought…

HANNAH
You thought what? That breaking into my house and just standing there would be a good thing to do!?

THE DOCTOR
Sorry I…

HANNAH
What do you want!?

THE DOCTOR
For you to come with me.

PAUSE.

HANNAH
What?

THE DOCTOR
I’ve thought about it and…I want to thank you for helping me out and basically saving the entire planet so…come with me?

HANNAH can’t contain her excitement, she’s about to lunge across the kitchen, but quickly remembers the glass and hops over the shattered pieces. Afterwards, the runs across and jumps on the Doctor to give him a big hug.

HANNAH
Yes, yes, a million times, yes!

THE DOCTOR
So, I’ll take that as a yes then?

HANNAH
What do I need to bring?

THE DOCTOR
Just pack clothes, essentials, etcetera.

HANNAH
I’ll be RIGHT back!

HANNAH runs up the stairs.

THE DOCTOR
I just have to make one more trip. I’ll be back in a minute! Travel light! Don’t make me regret bringing you!

THE DOCTOR makes his way to the TARDIS, but before he opens the door, he goes through his pockets and takes out the bag of Jelly Babies. The Doctor says to himself…

THE DOCTOR
I guess we’ll find out, indeed.

He smiles to himself and steps inside his TARDIS.

END CREDITS

EXT. DEEP SPACE – N/A

A view of Xanderland from space. A forest planet with lush, green and brown terrain.

After a brief silence, it slowly starts to become enveloped in a purple hew before completely disappearing.

The laugh of THE ENTITY can be heard echoing over the planet’s destruction.
