Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) – Official Trailer #1 (REACTION)
My very first review on this website was 2014’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘. While my review on that movie was less than generous I can’t help but feel some kind of attachment to that film, even if it’s entirely coincidental that it was my first written review here. The mountainside action sequence was amazing though. I have no problem saying that.
The movie was a pretty big hit for a Paramount almost grossing $500M Worldwide on a $125M budget so it’s unsurprising that we’re getting a sequel almost two years later for a Summer release. Yesterday Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon released their first trailer for the sequel now titled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows‘ (not to be confused with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows”; the terrible 2013 video game from Activision). This one however isn’t being brought to us from director Jonathan Liebesman but instead ‘Earth to Echo‘ director Dave Green.
It looks like a definite improve from the first movie but I can’t quite say that it looks like a good movie yet. But, credit where credit is due, the visual style looks more coherent, they’ve sized down the four turtles so they don’t look nearly as visually busy and don’t look like giant monsters (see pictured below; along with Donatello wearing an SNES controller on his right wrist) and it seems to be taking more inspiration from the 1980/90s TV series which is arguably their most iconic interpretation.
There are even some good laughs in this trailer such as Michelangelo reacting to Bebop with “Bringing back the mohawk? Good for you!”, April O’Neil (once again played by Megan Fox) trying to convince the ninjas to not attack her with by pointing out “This never works out well for you” and even Will Arnett got a laugh with “Why aren’t we going with the Turtles!? When something bad happens you wanna be with the Turtles!”.
But going back to the cartoon influences, I have a feeling that the mechanical ships coming out of the portal above New York City are part of the Technodrome, which was the villain Krang’s base in the original cartoon and comics, which could form together later on in the film. But that’s just speculation at this point.
If that IS the case, we could find ourselves with a very stuffed sequel since they’d be introducing Dimension X, Krang AND the elements shown in the trailer such as the return of the Shredder, introducing Baxter Stockman, Casey Jones (looking awesome and being played by “Arrow”s Stephen Amell) and Bebop and Rocksteady.
The latter two are fan favourite side-villains from the cartoon series and both actually look pretty awesome here despite some sketchy and unfinished CGI. Bebop (a Warthog) and Rocksteady (a Rhino) were often bumbling, inept comic-relief in the cartoon series but seem more effective as villains here. And can we just appreciate this image of the two about to ride motorcycles? Regardless of how bad this film could turn out to be, we at least have THIS image for the rest of time.
Also, the trailer ends with Rocksteady piloting a tank which emerges from the water to attack the Turtles. A Rhino is driving a tank. Wonderful.
Also introduced is the first live-action Turtle-Van and we also have Baxter Stockman played by Tyler Perry who seems to know he’s in a kids film and I think this trailer is aimed squarely at a younger audience. If that’s the movie’s target demographic then that’s not an issue. But then you have Megan Fox as April O’Neil showing off her mid-riff and pushing up her chest in the trailer and then this movie can no longer use the “it’s just for little kids” excuse. Seriously, Nickelodeon. That is not necessary in a movie like this.
The trailer looks alright but the movie it’s advertising feels very jam-packed with potential villain-overload. We never actually see the Shredder in the same scene as Bebop and Rocksteady and we never see any of them interact with the Portal above New York so are all of these separate plot-elements? If so, this movie may have already crippled itself. BUT it does look better than the first one and I did like quite a few elements here.
Plus it has a Rhino driving a tank. If this movie ISN’T better than the first one then it has to be some form of divine intervention.
