X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) – Official Trailer #1 (REACTION)
It has been a trailer-palooza over the past couple of days with the big companies releasing trailers for their biggest Summer movies in 2016.
And now, 20th Century Fox have dropped their first public trailer (second trailer overall if you count their SDCC exclusive trailer) for their 8th X-Men Movie; ‘X-Men Apocalypse‘. With the last movie ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ acting as a soft reboot for the franchise, this is the third movie in the prequel series which started with ‘X-Men: First Class‘ which also ties into the original X-Men trilogy and the trilogy of Wolverine movies.
X-Men movie continuity is a mess.
But the recent movies have still been incredibly strong thanks to a bold new cast and great dramatic themes. Bold and dramatic definitely sums up the first trailer but let’s take a look at the teaser poster first.
The poster is simple but striking and the tagline of “Only the strong will survive” sums up the villain of Apocalypse very well. It’s a teaser poster and doesn’t go against the grain much, but it works well. There’s actually a motion poster of this image online where the burn marks on the X flicker but it’s pretty much pointless and kinda lame.
Anyway, let’s talk trailer.
I like how this trailer put the brand new cast members front and centre instead of hiding behind the star power. Obviously we know that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and other talented actors will be returning and while they do have a presence here it feels like a true ensemble piece. We see Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler all replacing older actors for these younger interpretations in the 1980s. We even have new characters in this movie like Jubilee played by Lana Condor, which should make fans of the 1990s animated series very happy.
But a big element of this trailer was Apocalypse who, as discussed on the Film Brits podcast a few months ago, essentially has the power to have all the powers he wants. This introduction to him is a lot better than the Entertainment Weekly images which gave the internet a lot of geek-rage. I’ve not doubt Oscar Isaac will kill it in the role and I particularly like the scene where has Xavier pinned to the floor and he’s growing in size.
A lot of emphasis here was placed on his four horseman who have either been convinced to join him or forced against their will. We have Magneto played by the aforementioned Fassbender, we have newcomer to the series Psylocke played by Olivia Munn and returning players with different faces in Storm played by Alexandra Shipp and Angel played by Ben Hardy. We don’t see much of Psylocke but Storm and Angel look terrific, particularly Angel’s transformation into Archangel which gives him bladed wings.
One element I wasn’t too ecstatic about was Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique seemingly being promoted as a leader of the X-Men in this movie. It just doesn’t seem to match with what’s come from the character before and it’s clear that Lawrence isn’t too fussed about being in these movies anymore so why give here an even MORE prominent role?
But we get some great hero shots here, it looks appropriately dark and apart from Mystique’s role in the story I don’t think there’s a single element about this debut trailer I didn’t like. James McAvoy absolutely KILLED IT in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ and he looks set to do it all again in this trailer with the final few shots focusing entirely on him. His reaction to sensing Apocalypse’s power through Cerebro was chilling, especially with his eyes becoming entirely black and even the slight smile he gives gave me chills. Apocalypse is the biggest bad guy in the X-Men universe and that comes across in this trailer and through those final moments.
And that final shot of Xavier in the wheelchair and without any hair is just awesome. It really suits McAvoy as well. Like a boss.
With this movie, ‘Deadpool‘ and potentially ‘Gambit‘ coming next year, 2016 could be the year of the X-Men and this tent-pole blockbuster looks set to be the X-Men’s darkest hour but potentially their best.
